peeled garlic,21food - How To Make Pickled Garlic?

An innovative addition to any relish tray, pickled garlic can also be used to spice up many sauces and other recipes. It tastes sweeter than raw or cooked garlic. It's relatively easy to make at home using fresh garlic cloves in good condition. Like other relishes, it can be purchased ready-to-eat from many specialty stores. Pickled garlic comes in jars and can be found in a variety of flavors, such as spicy, mild, and habanero, as well as plain.

For those who are particularly adventurous in the kitchen, pickled garlic can also be made at home. The preparation time is minimal, but the soaking of the garlic lengthens the project. Recipes vary depending on the specific tastes of the cook, but most follow the same basic structure.

The garlic should be peeled before it is pickled. Only clean, fresh cloves of garlic should be used to make pickled garlic. Before beginning the pickling process, a cook should examine each clove and discard any that have brown spots or blemishes, are soft and rotted, or are beginning to grow a sprout in the center.

Next, bring six parts white vinegar and one part white sugar to a boil in a large saucepan. Blanching the unpeeled cloves for 30 seconds to 1 minute makes removing the papery skins easier. As the cloves need to be whole or nearly whole when pickled for aesthetic reasons, a cook shouldn't smash the cloves with a knife to remove the peels. Another way to remove the peels is with a vegetable peeler. Other ingredients, such as dill, celery seed, or peppers, can be added during the boiling stage to achieve a different flavor.

Once the mixture has boiled a second time, the cook should take it off the heat and let it sit for a day at room temperature. When the vinegar and peeled garlic mixture has rested for a day, the cook should then pour it into a clean glass jar, cover it with a lid, and store in the refrigerator. Once the jars have been filled, seal them and store them in the refrigerator. In approximately three weeks, you will have your own home-made pickled garlic.

Pickled garlic is not only a delicious treat for garlic lovers. Today, garlic has been proven to contribute to cardiovascular health and to boost the immune system. Historically, garlic has been used to treat arthritis, freckles, and cancer. Like fresh garlic, pickled garlic also has a variety of health benefits.

Annual Number of Car Thefts in the U.S. Set to Fall Again - Auto ...

The number of car thefts nationwide is set to decline for another year, with the crime showing shrinking numbers for the better part of a decade, according to a report released this week by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) on 2011 theft statistics.

The report showed that the metropolitan area of Fresno, Calif. had the highest rate of theft, followed by Modesto, Calif.

The rate was calculated as the amount of auto thefts per 100,000 people, and locations were determined by metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) that typically went beyond city boundaries to include county areas.

The top ten MSAs with the highest auto theft rates in 2011, along with their standings in 2009 and 2010, can be found in the table in the upper right.

If preliminary figures hold? the NCIB releases final statistics in the fall?auto thefts nationwide will have declined for eight straight years.

Another preliminary report from the FBI, released last week, showed that auto thefts in 2011 fell 3.3 percent compared with 2010.

California a Longtime Hotspot for Car Thefts

NCIB?s annual reports show that metro areas in California have consistently been hot spots for auto theft. In fact, 7 of the top 10 metropolitan areas for auto theft rates in 2011 were in California, and 18 of the top 50 metropolitan areas for auto theft rates last year were in the state.

Consumers wanting to protect themselves financially against auto theft will want to look at comprehensive coverage as an addition to their insurance policy. The optional kind of insurance coverage reimburses policyholders in situations of vehicular theft.

Online Auto Insurance conducted an analysis of average comprehensive coverage rates at nine insurance carriers in the state for the Fresno metro area, which had the highest auto theft rate in California, and Santa Maria metro area, which had the lowest theft rate in the state, according to the NICB. The data showed that the local theft rate can have a serious effect on residents? ability to get cheap car insurance in California that covers theft of a vehicle.

The analysis showed that the average comprehensive coverage policy in Fresno, which saw 1 theft for every 124 residents, was 52 percent more expensive than the average comprehensive policy in Santa Maria, which saw 1 theft for every 752 residents.

Harvin requests trade, skips Vikings practice

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) ? Percy Harvin was nowhere to be found at the Minnesota Vikings' mandatory minicamp practice Wednesday afternoon, and no one seems to know when the star receiver will be back in purple.

Unhappy with several issues with the team that drafted him in the first round in 2009, Harvin requested a trade, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

After participating in a light walk-through practice on Wednesday morning with his teammates, Harvin wasn't present for the full afternoon practice. Head coach Leslie Frazier declined to go into detail on Harvin's absence and said he wasn't sure if one of the team's most important players would be around for the final day Thursday.

"We're going to talk more in detail," Frazier said. "We have a lot of things to talk about."

Vikings GM Rick Spielman said the organization considers Harvin a cornerstone player and will work to resolve any issues that have upset him.

"We have no interest at all in trading Percy Harvin," Spielman said. "We drafted Percy Harvin here. He's a key part of our organization. He's a key part of our football team. Any issues that are out there, or reported, we always handle those internally, and we'll continue to handle those internally."

The situation seemingly came out of nowhere this week, surprising many Vikings players and coaches when Harvin voiced his frustrations with the team Tuesday at the opening of minicamp.

"I just put it this way: There's a lot of different things that have to be sorted out," Harvin said Tuesday. "Just haven't been really happy lately. We've got a couple of things to work on. I'm here in the classroom. We'll go from there."

Harvin declined to go into detail about his grievances. He is due to make $915,000 in the fourth year of a five-year rookie deal. That total is much lower than veterans Michael Jenkins and Jerome Simpson, with neither coming close to his production on the field.

But indications are that Harvin's issues go far deeper than just money. His role in the offense, which diminished greatly last season when the Vikings reached the red zone, and the organization's decision to go into a rebuilding phase coming off of consecutive last-place finishes in the NFC North combined with his modest salary all figure to factor into his mindset.

Requesting a trade now would be a curious move if his main motivation is a new contract. Most players in similar situations first voice their concerns, then threaten to holdout of training camp before going as far as to request a trade.

Harvin did not speak to reporters on Wednesday, but did post a message on his Twitter account.

"Fans I said I have issues to be worked out money not at all being the problem," Harvin wrote...I've (done) everything asked and more..."

Spielman would not say if money was an issue, but also reiterated the organization's approach to signing players to extensions.

"Our philosophy has always been as players enter the last year of their contract we have a history of extending players going into the last year of their contract," Spielman said. "And that's been our history."

Harvin has emerged as perhaps the most versatile and dynamic player on the team. He earned respect in the locker room for his willingness to play through injuries and still produce late in last year's miserable 3-13 season. In May, Harvin showed up at voluntary workouts despite still recovering from shoulder surgery and spoke of asserting himself as a leader and encouraging other players to participate in the team's offseason program.

He caught 87 passes for 967 yards and six touchdowns last season, rushed for another 345 yards and two scores and also returned a kick for a touchdown during a sensational year.

Harvin dealt with migraine headaches and numerous other minor injuries as the result of his punishing style of play, missing one game his rookie season and two in 2010, which brought concerns about his durability over the long term.

He played in all 16 games last season, establishing himself as one of the game's top slot receivers and most dangerous kick returners.

"Percy is a phenomenal player on the field," Spielman said. "And you look at his statistics he had last year and how important he is to this franchise. He's a vital part of us moving forward with this team."

But somewhere between his appearance at team headquarters in May and his return to Minnesota this week, something went wrong for Harvin.

After making the NFC title game as a rookie, the Vikings have taken significant steps backward the last two seasons. They are centering their rebuild on Harvin, Peterson, who is recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee, and second-year quarterback Christian Ponder.

Harvin is far and away Ponder's best option in the receiver corps that includes non-descript veterans Jenkins and Devin Aromashodu, rookie fourth-round picks Jarius Wright and Greg Childs and Simpson, who will be suspended for the first three games this season after being arrested on drug charges while with the Cincinnati Bengals.

After signing tight end John Carlson from Seattle, there has been a lot of talk about the Vikings going to more two tight-end sets to take advantage of him and second-year tight end Kyle Rudolph. That could also be a concern for Harvin, but offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said he was unaware of any problems Harvin had with the playbook. Musgrave said he planned to get the ball to Harvin even more this season.

"We're looking forward to getting him on the field and as an offense we're looking forward to having a better year," Musgrave said. "That's the bottom line."

Peterson said he hadn't spoken to his friend about it but planned to have a conversation to try to help smooth things over.

"I wouldn't say it's distracting. It's more bothering. It's like, we definitely don't want to lose this guy. ... I'm sure the organization will do what it has to do to keep this guy around," Peterson said. "If it was me, I would make sure that we kept him around. But we'll see."

Frazier said the two sides have to get on the same page by the time the team reports to Mankato for camp on July 26.

"Hopefully, we'll be headed in the right direction when we get to training camp and everyone can focus on getting ready for the Jacksonville game," Frazier said. "That's the way it has to be. We can't afford any outside distractions."

98 Degrees Reuniting For MixTape Festival Because 'It Just Felt Right'

'We all miss the rush of being onstage together,' Nick Lachey tells Ryan Seacrest.
By Jocelyn Vena

Back in April, Nick Lachey had the message "#neversaynever" for his fans after he shot down rumors that 98 Degrees would be hitting the road this summer.

The excitement over a possible 98 Degrees reunion began to spread in late March after the band's website was spruced up, leading fans to speculate that something greater was coming. Now, a few months later, the rumors seem to finally be coming true — in part, at least.

The band just announced they will be reuniting for one show this summer. On Wednesday, Nick Lachey opened up to Ryan Seacrest about their plans to take the stage at the MixTape Festival in Hershey, Pennsylvania, in August.

"I think we've all been lucky in the 11 years since we last performed together to go on and do stuff individually. Drew [Lachey] was the winner of 'Dancing With the Stars' season 2, and I've gone and done some solo stuff. But there really is nothing like coming together as a unit, as a group, as a band, on the stage, and I think we all miss that. We all miss the rush of being onstage together, performing together, and certainly the fans have kind of been clamoring for it, so it just felt right," he said. "We always said we were not broken up, we were just taking a break, and now it just seemed like the right time to put everything back together."

He also clarified his previous declaration that the band would not be getting together at all, despite the original spate of rumors. "I didn't say we weren't going to do it, but there was some speculation about a full tour happening this summer and our fans have been kind of eager to see us get back together," he said. "I just wanted to make sure that they understood that a full tour wasn't happening this summer, but obviously [I'm] very excited to announce that we're doing this big festival in Hershey in August. So that will be our one and only appearance."

While brother Drew notes that they would have to be able to shuffle around their schedules in the right way to make dates outside of the MixTape Festival work, he added that this particular date felt like the right event to test out the waters for something bigger in the future.

"We're very excited about the opportunity, and we've been toying around with the idea for a couple years of 'if we got back together, when would be the right scenario?' " he said. "And this music festival right here just kind of seemed like the right time to get back together and do a show and kick the tires and see how it feels."

Other boy bands on the lineup for the MixTape Festival include the Wanted, New Kids on the Block and New Kids/ Backstreet Boys mega-band NKOTBSB.

Housing starts drop, but permits jump

Tony Gutierrez / AP

Jeff Raymond, left, with Ari-Tex Electric Inc., prepares to install lighting in a Hawkins-Welwood Homes luxry townhome site Wednesday, May 16, 2012, in Plano, Texas.

By Patrick Rizzo

Construction companies broke ground?on fewer privately-owned homes?in May, but permits to begin construction jumped,?raising hopes that the housing market's recovery was still rolling along.

The Commerce Department?reported Tuesday that?housing starts dropped?4.8?percent last month to a seasonally-adjusted rate of 708,000. Single-family housing starts rose?3.2 percent, but multi-family home starts dropped 21.3 percent.

Permits for future construction rose?7.9 percent last month, however,?to the highest since September 2008 when the nation was in the depths of the worst housing crisis since the Great Depression.

The data came a day after a report from home builders showing that their industry is feeling the most upbeat in five years.

The NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market index rose one point from the month before to 29, in another sign that the housing market may be slowly heading into recovery, and one point ahead of the expectations of economists polled by Reuters. May's reading was previously reported as 29.

It also comes as the Federal Reserve begins a two-day meeting to weigh the state of the entire economy and whether the central bank?should act to help revive what seems to be a flagging recovery. Despite the drop in May's numbers after a big rise i n April, the housing market could prove to be a bright spot in the Fed's outlook.
