Gronkowski says ankle is ?great? at golf event

Rob Gronkowski was talking about his football career.

Or was it his golf game?

?Just always grinding,? the Patriots tight end answered when asked what his preparations for the upcoming NFL season entail.

A self-proclaimed ?hacker,? Gronkowski teamed up with linebacker Rob Ninkovich to serve as guest co-hosts for the fourth annual Joe Andruzzi and Friends GolTif Tournament at Granite Links Golf Club yesterday afternoon.

Why, even the celebrities in the field were impressed.

?It?s Gronk,? comedian Lenny Clarke said. ?The $50 million man. How could we go wrong? And we?re doing it for a good cause, too.?

It was, indeed, for a good cause ? the Joe Andruzzi Foundation, which provides financial aid to cancer patients and their families, and funds pediatric brain cancer research at Children?s Hospital Boston.

?It?s a great cause,? Gronkowski said, noting that getting to play a free round of golf while also indulging in a couple of meals ranked as solid perks on top of it all.

Gronkowski also used the word ?great? to describe the condition of the left ankle that left him hobbling in Super Bowl XLVI, subsequently requiring him to undergo surgery after he danced the night away following the Patriots? painful 21-17 loss to the New York Giants in Indianapolis..

Gronkowski declined to say, however, whether the ankle, which prevented him from being an active participant in the Patriots? organized team activities and last week?s minicamp, would allow him to hit the ground running when training camp begins next month.

?I?m not telling you,? Gronkowski said, playing around with a reporter who posed a question along those lines. ?No, I?m just kidding.?

Actually, he wasn?t kidding at all; Gronkowski wasn?t telling.

Gronkowsi was more than willing to share his feelings in the aftermath of the six-year, $54 million contract extension that the Patriots recently tacked on to the two seasons he still has remaining on the deal he signed as a rookie.

?I?m just happy,? he said. ?Both sides are really happy.

?I love all my fans out there. (It?s a) great community, great team. It?s awesome going out there every single Sunday and playing every Sunday in front of that crowd, so I?m happy to be here (for the) long-term definitely, and just feel like both sides are really happy. It just all worked out well.?

Gronkowski has worked out well since the 2010 draft when the Patriots scooped him up in the second round.

In two years with the team, the Arizona product has latched on to 132 passes for 1,873 yards and 27 touchdowns, 1,327 yards and 17 TD receptions (he also scored one TD on a lateral) coming last year in what was a league record-setting season for a tight end.

Beyond all that, Gronkowski?s carefree personality has endeared him to New Englanders; here is a guy who can be as humorous off the field as he is hard nosed on it.

?Just always grinding,? Gronkowski said of his regimen for the 2012 season. ?Monday through Friday, just always working out, eating right, running.

?It?s all the players. We just kind of have off for the next five weeks and you?ve just got to make sure you?re running, staying up (on your conditioning), someone?s throwing you routes, someone?s throwing you passes. Just keeping all up to it so when it comes to training camp you?re ready to get focused.?

Turned out to be a rather memorable Monday for Robert Kraft.

Announced as this year?s recipient of the George Halas Award, Kraft is the first NFL owner and first member of the Patriots franchise to be so honored.

It was also announced that on Oct. 18 of this year, Kraft will be inducted into the Columbia University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Kraft received a bachelor?s degree in history and economics from Columbia in 1963.

Kraft is receiving the Halas Award in recognition of the lead role he played in last summer?s collective bargaining negotiations between the NFL and the NFL Players Association during his late wife Myra?s battle with cancer.

The award, which is in its 43rd year, is presented annually by the Professional Football Writers of America ?to an NFL player, coach or staff member who overcomes the most adversity to succeed.?

It was five days after his wife?s passing that Kraft stood outside the NFLPA?s headquarters in Washington, D.C., and, in what became the league?s poster moment for labor accord, received a hug from Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday as the agreement on a 10-year CBA was announced.

?A special thanks to Myra Kraft, who even in her weakest moment allowed Mr. Kraft to come and fight this out, and without him this deal does not get done,? Saturday said on that July 25 day. ?I don?t want to be climactic in any way, but he is a man who helped us save football, and we are so gracious for that. We?re gracious for his family and for the opportunity he presented to get this deal done.?

Dedicating their season to Myra Kraft?s memory, the Patriots won the AFC championship, but fell short in Super Bowl XLVI to the New York Giants.

With Simplified Profiles, Twitter Makes It Easier To Browse Celebrity Accounts

twitter steve martinEvery once in a while, I'll stumble on the Twitter account of a celebrity I admire. Once I get past my moment of "OMG, it's Neil Gaiman!" Other times, I'm left thinking, "God, I have no idea what's going," because their tweet stream is dominated by incomprehensible conversations with people I don't know or care about.

Woody Allen works his movie therapy in 'To Rome'

NEW YORK ? Ozymandias melancholia.

It's a psychological state that is mentioned by two characters in Woody Allen's latest film, To Rome With Love, which opens Friday: Alec Baldwin's wistful architect and Ellen Page's self-absorbed actress, both of whom claim to be afflicted.

It is also a rare clue about what makes one of American cinema's greatest and most prolific artists tick.

Borrowing from the title of Percy Bysshe Shelley's 1818 poem about a broken statue of a once-mighty king that is found in a desert, the phrase refers to a depression over the realization that nothing is permanent.

Don't look for the malady in any medical textbook, though. Instead, watch Allen's Stardust Memories from 1980, a caustic portrait of a filmmaker looking back over his life and creative output that stylistically echoes Italian master Federico Fellini's similarly autobiographical 8? from 1963.

"It is a phrase I coined and felt entitled to use again," Allen says while seated in the dark velvet-lined womb of his office and screening room on Park Avenue. "It is a contemporary syndrome."

Does he worry that his films won't be remembered? "I don't care about my work lasting. I would like to last. They can turn my movies into guitar picks. Nothing lasts. Nothing at all. Not even the sun."

Given such disturbing insights, it is hard to know whether all those years Allen spent in therapy paid off ? or just made his existential despair into fodder for future features.

Turns out the locale of his new comedy is the perfect place to experience this condition amid all the crumbling ancient ruins. "You get that feeling in Rome all the time," he says. "You are surrounded by what would have been a grand palace or building or statue. Now, like Ozymandias in the poem, it's nothing but a headless trunk."

He did find some refuge in the city's reliably delicious cuisine. "That is one of the great treats of being there," Allen says of his first filmmaking foray in the Eternal City. Jesse Eisenberg, who plays Page's admirer, observed firsthand as the director enjoyed a pizza. "He eats it like everyone else," reports the star of The Social Network. "One leg at a time."

At least Woody fans now know the reason why, after more than 40 films in nearly half a century, the 76-year-old director refuses to take a break from his pace of averaging a movie a year.

Basically, he doesn't want to think about being a headless trunk someday.

It also explains why he is not overly impressed by the fact that he just achieved the biggest box-office hit of his career with last year's dreamily romantic Midnight in Paris.

The most enthusiasm he can summon for the $60-million-grossing film that led to his record third Oscar for an original screenplay is to describe it as "a happy accident."

"I try my best on all of them," says Allen, who has had his fair share of misses ? most recently, 2010's You Will Meet aTall Dark Stranger landed with a tall dark thud ? mingled among successes. "Some work out nicely. Some work out not as nicely. Some work out better than that. For some reason, people had a great affection for Midnight in Paris. Who knows why?"

Baldwin, who appeared in Allen's Alice in 1990 and already has signed up for his third Woody vehicle ? a yet-to-be-titled project that starts shooting in August in New York and San Francisco? is grateful that the movies keep on coming. "A lesser effort by Woody is better than most of what is out there. If only every third movie grabs you by the lapels, it's worth sitting by with the other two and waiting. Like rings on a tree, there are so many levels to his work."

The setting sets the tone

Allen rarely affords himself the luxury of pondering the public's reception of his efforts, especially as he continues to explore shooting in places far beyond his Manhattan comfort zone. To Rome With Love, which reflects the major influence of Italian cinema on his work, serves up a quartet of humorous vignettes, peppered with unfaithful lovers and reflections on the nature of celebrity, with a soundtrack that is heavy on Volare and Arrivederci Roma.

Ever since he switched to European settings, starting with London in 2005's Match Point, Allen has allowed the mood of each city to dictate the tone of the movie. And his version of comedy Italian-style is very much a farce, albeit with an undercurrent of dark satire.

"There are such strong personalities to these cities," he says. "Rome is chaotic, hilarious, joyfully alive and full of farce. Paris has a romantic lovers' feel, a nostalgic feeling. In Italy, you don't think back to the earlier eras so much. It really came into its own post-World War II, and that is when Italian filmmakers began to define their country for Americans. It is very energetic and lusty."

As usual, the cast features Allen veterans such as Baldwin and Penelope Cruz (who in 2009 won an Oscar for Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona), along with newcomers such as Eisenberg, Page and indie darling Greta Gerwig. Homegrown performers include Roberto Benigni, an Oscar winner for 1998's Life Is Beautiful, as an average man who is suddenly hounded by paparazzi.

But the most noteworthy participant on-screen might be Allen himself, showing up in one of his own films for the first time since 2006's Scoop. The conversation turns bittersweet as he regrets that he can no longer pull off the wisecracking swain role that he perfected in 1977's Annie Hall.

"I would have liked to have played Jesse Eisenberg's part, but I am too old," he says. "I was always the guy sitting opposite the girl in the caf?, pitching her and making jokes and trying to make her fall in love with me."

Not that he minds Queens native Eisenberg, 28, as his substitute. In fact, he agrees that they seem to have been fated to collaborate. "He gets it right off," Allen says. "He speaks at double my speed. He is in that scrapbook of characters that I could be."

Instead, Allen plays an unhappily retired and somewhat neurotic opera director who pins a comeback attempt on his discovery of an Italian mortician who can sing like Pavarotti ? but only in the shower.

Though he says the retirement angle is parenthetical to the humor of the segment, it once again underlines his need to maintain his continuing existence in the world.

"I don't see myself not working," Allen says. "Not because of any great contribution I have to make, but because I would be sitting at home, brooding and being depressed. When I work, it keeps my mind on stupid, solvable problems. I'm thinking of the third act and how I can make it work."

Being cast in your first Woody Allen film has long been a rite of passage, and Eisenberg is no different from the rest of his generation in coveting such a chance. He was fascinated to watch one of his idols on the job.

"There is such efficiency on his set," he says. "He is so adept at handling all the myriad things that can come up. He does it with such ease. It is intimidating to work with someone who is a million times more interesting as a performer than you are."

No spotlight for him

As is his routine, Allen was a no-show at this year's Oscar ceremony despite four nominations for Midnight in Paris, including best picture. He can't even vote, because he isn't a member of the academy.

"I'm not a joiner," Allen explains while missing an opportunity to reference his hero Groucho Marx's infamous quip: "I don't care to belong to any club that will have me as a member."

Nor does the onetime stand-up comic who specialized in self-belittlement display his trophies ? his directing win for Annie Hall brings his Oscar tally to four ? in a place where others may admire them. "I hate to tell you where," he says of the potential mini-Ozymandiases. "They're in my closet on the top shelf. I'm not a person who has photographs around the house of movies that I've been in or people I've worked with or things I've won. It's always embarrassed me."

Besides, "I see them whenever I take my underwear out ? which is every morning."

Wild almond tree oil may combat obesity, diabetes

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? A future weapon in the battle against obesity and diabetes could come in the form of an oil derived from the seeds of wild almond trees, according to researchers at Missouri University of Science and Technology.

The key to the oil's potential lies in its ability to affect certain microorganisms living in our bellies.

In a study presented June 18 at the American Society for Microbiology's general meeting in San Francisco, Missouri S&T researchers reported that adding sterculic oil to the diets of obese laboratory mice increased their sensitivity to insulin. This was due to the oil's effect on three types of microorganisms that live in the guts of the mice.

As a result, the researchers saw a "statistically significant improvement in glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in the obese mice," says Shreya Ghosh, a Ph.D. student in environmental engineering at Missouri S&T. The sterculic oil had no adverse affects on lean mice fed the same diet.

Sterculic oil is extracted from the seeds of the wild almond tree known as Sterculia foetida.

The research by Ghosh and her advisor, Dr. Daniel Oerther, builds upon previous studies conducted at the University of Missouri-Columbia. In those studies, sterculic oil was found to suppress the bodily enzyme stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1). SCD1 is associated with insulin resistance, a condition that can lead to diabetes and obesity.

Other studies have shown that obese mice deficient in the hormone leptin have a different composition of "gut microbiota" than do lean mice. (Those studies are referenced in a 2011 article in Nature Reviews Microbiology) Leptin helps regulate metabolism, and a deficiency of the hormone can contribute to obesity, says Oerther, the John and Susan Mathes Chair of Environmental Engineering at Missouri S&T.

In the Missouri S&T study, a diet supplemented by sterculic oil also correlated with lower levels of three types of gut microbiota -- Actinobacteria, Bacilli and Erysipelotrichia -- in the obese mice. It isn't clear, however, whether the lower levels of those microbiota led to the improvement of glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity among the obese mice, Oerther says.

To perform her experiments, Ghosh studied 28 male mice -- 14 of them obese and 14 normal, and each of them five weeks old at the beginning of the study. She separated the mice into four groups and for nine weeks, fed a standard diet to one group of obese mice and one group of non-obese mice. Over the same period, she fed the same diet, supplemented with 0.5 percent of sterculic oil, to one group of obese mice and one group of non-obese mice. Ghosh recorded the weights, food consumption and glucose levels of the mice during the nine-week period.

After the nine weeks, researchers conducted a DNA analysis of the gut microbiota at King Abdullah Institute of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia. The results confirmed correlations between the diet, improved glucose tolerance and groups of microbes. Even though the mice fed a diet with sterculic oil did not experience weight loss, both Ghosh and Oerther believe their findings could lead to new insights into controlling diabetes and weight gain.

Ghosh's research poster presentation at the ASM meeting is titled "Responses of Gut Microbiota to Sterculic Oil Supplemented Diet in Lean and Obese Mice." Her co-authors were Oerther; Dr. James W. Perfield II, assistant professor of food science at the University of Missouri-Columbia; and Dr. Pascal Saikaly, assistant professor of environmental science and engineering at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia.

Germany advances after 2-1 win over Denmark

LVIV, Ukraine (AP) ? Germany advanced to the European Championship quarterfinals without playing brilliantly.

They didn't have to.

After grinding out its third straight win with a 2-1 victory against Denmark on Sunday, Germany finished on top of a group that didn't end up being as dangerous as it looked on paper.

World Cup finalist the Netherlands was a major disappointment, losing all three Group B matches. Cristiano Ronaldo found his form just in the nick of time to take Portugal to the quarterfinals as runner-up to Germany.

And Denmark just wasn't up to the task of repeating its upset from 20 years ago, when it stunned Germany to win the European Championship.

"I think we had the game well under control," Germany coach Joachim Loew said. "We had a lot of possession and I was sure that we would score and advance."

Germany next faces Euro 2004 champion Greece on Friday in Gdansk in a clash with significance beyond football, bringing together the two main protagonists ? and occasional foes ? in Europe's financial crisis.

If Germany and defending champion Spain keep winning, they will meet in the final on July 1.

Lukas Podolski opened the scoring for Germany in the 19th minute and Lars Bender slotted home the winner in the 80th after Michael Krohn-Dehli had equalized for Denmark in the first half.

"It's absolutely a day of joy," Bender said. "I'll be thinking back to this day a long, long time. We have a positive spirit in the team."

Germany played without flair, but controlled possession and were never really challenged by the Danes, who go home after stunning the Netherlands in the first match but losing to Portugal in the second.

Seizing the initiative from the kickoff, the Germans came close twice before Podolski, playing his 100th international match, scored his first goal of the tournament.

Mario Gomez set him up with a deft backheel touch following Thomas Mueller's low cross from the right flank.

"It was a special occasion to mark my 100th cap with a goal," Podolski said. "But the most important thing is that we are through to the knockout stage."

He was the seventh player to reach that milestone for Germany or West Germany.

Denmark replied just five minutes later with Krohn-Dehli heading in the equalizer from a set piece that stunned the German defense. A corner found Nicklas Bendtner who headed the ball into the area where Krohn-Dehli nodded home his second goal at Euro 2012.

"We should have gone ahead by two or three goals in the first half, but Denmark scored virtually out of nowhere," said.

Jakob Poulsen missed a chance to put Denmark in the driver's seat at the start of the second half when his shot grazed the outside of German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's right post.

After that scare, the Germans were firmly in charge and denied Denmark any real chance of getting back into the game.

The Danes were already looking tired when Bender, replacing suspended right back Jerome Boateng, picked up a pass from Mesut Oezil and made it 2-1.

Coach Morten Olsen said the Spanish referee missed a penalty call when Bendtner was pulled down in the area but praised the Germans, saying they deserved to win the game and the group.

He dismissed suggestions his team should have tried to push back the Germans more boldly in the second half.

"They are dynamic and they are fast, so you need to watch out and not play too naively," Olsen said.

It was the first competitive match between the two countries since the 1992 European Championship final, when the Danes stunned the Germans with a 2-0 win to become champions.

Hoping for another upset, Olsen changed his lineup by moving playmaker Christian Eriksen to the right flank, replacing injured winger Dennis Rommedahl in a five-man midfield.

But the move had little effect as Philipp Lahm effectively closed down the talented 20-year-old, who leaves Euro 2012 without fulfilling expectations of an international breakthrough.

"We can be satisfied with our effort but not with the result," Denmark midfielder William Kvist said.

"I think we proved that we can play against the big teams. We won (against the Netherlands) and we didn't lose big. We showed that we can play against the best."

Microsoft expected to unveil a tablet to rival iPad

People walk past a new Microsoft Store at Bridgewater Commons for the first time in Bridgewater, N.J. (Handout / June 15, 2012)

Los Angeles Times

6:00 a.m. CDT, June 15, 2012

Microsoft issued a media invitation to a super-secret event Monday in Los Angeles: "This will be a major Microsoft announcement -- you will not want to miss it."

Although the tech giant gave no hints about what it was planning to announce -- even keeping the address a secret -- a source told The Wrap that Microsoft plans to unveil a tablet to rival Apple's iPad.

The entertainment blog said the company plans to introduce a Microsoft-branded-and-manufactured tablet at the event, "marking a foray into a new hardware category that would put the company in direct competition" with Apple. There's been talk of a Microsoft tablet for years, but nothing has surfaced.

According to the Wrap, the Microsoft tablet will run on Windows RT, a version of Windows 8.

Microsoft's Monday event begins at 3:30 p.m. Media invitees were told that their invitations were non-transferable. "However, if you would like to send your local colleague in your place, please submit that name and it will be reviewed."

The company said additional information, including the specific venue, would be sent to registered attendees on Monday by 10 a.m.
