Reasons Why Investing In Gold Is A Good Idea | FINANCE-DEBT ...

There are many benefits to gold investing. For one, it is known to hold its value throughout the ages. Also, when a country?s currency becomes weak, people turn to gold because they feel that it is more secure. This demand for gold will increase the price, which makes it possible for the trader to earn a profit through selling. It is also considered to be a good hedge against inflation because its price usually goes up with a country?s cost of living. When the economy is not very good, gold?s purchasing power is not drastically affected. Compared to other asset classes such as currency, gold has impressive stability despite geopolitical uncertainty. Production of new gold from mines has been declining since the start of the 21st century. This decreased supply increases the demand for gold, and consequently, its price. Experts say that the price for gold will continue to rise in the next 5-10 years. Also, gold is a good way to diversify your investment portfolio. This will shield your portfolio from the risk of losing money in the event that one market performs poorly. If gold investing seems interesting to you, below are some tips on buying gold.

Different Ways of Investing in Gold

While the traditional way of investing in gold is by buying bullion gold bars, many people have become more partial to buying gold coins because they are more economical to purchase and easier to trade and store than the former. Others also purchase gold as jewelry, which enables them to invest in the yellow metal and also enjoy the jewelry.

Where is the Best Place to Buy Gold?

Gold can be purchased from dealers online and offline, jewelry and coin sellers, and government mints. Many agree that the best place to buy gold would be from government mints because their coins usually come with a reliable guarantee of gold content, weight, and purity. If you want to purchase gold from private dealers, ascertain if they have been doing this for a long time, like thirty years. Even though you can buy gold from auction websites and individual investors, they tend to be risky sources. Stories of people getting gold-plated lead coins, not receiving the coins or bars they ordered, paying far more than the spot price, or cajoled into buying gold with fake guarantees are unfortunately not uncommon. When buying gold from a dealer, check first if they hold current membership with a professional numismatist organization. While this does not make you impervious to scams, it is a good indicator that you?re dealing with a dealer that adheres to strict industry standards.

Americans are more likely to donate to a charity that reflects the values of their political affiliation, according to a new study from Rice University, the University of Texas at San Antonio and Pennsylvania State University.

"The political divide not only impacts political actions, but everyday actions such as donating to charity," said Rice University Professor Vikas Mittal, co-author of the research paper. "When you ask people if their donation behavior to a charity helping children will change because of their political leanings, most say, 'Of course not!' We wanted to see if that is true or not."

The paper, which will appear in the International Journal of Research in Marketing: Special Issue on Consumer Identities, is based on three studies, two of which comprised nationally representative samples of adults and another based on a randomized experiment with students. The researchers asked why liberals or conservatives would donate more or less to a specific charity.

According to Mittal, the J. Hugh Liedtke Professor of Marketing at Rice's Jones Graduate School of Business, donations to a specific charity by Republicans and Democrats are strongly affected by their perceptions of the charity's alignment with each party's respective moral foundations. Republicans' moral foundations are embedded in respect for authority and traditions, loyalty and purity; Democrats' moral foundations are rooted in equality and protection from harm.

In a novel study, the researchers presented participants with a description of the same charity, Rebuilding Together. However, they subtly changed small parts of the description to suggest that the charity was either supporting American traditions and loyalty or ensuring equality. Among participants who indicated that morals are highly important, they found that Republicans were almost three times as likely as Democrats to donate when the charity was described as supporting working American families following traditions and supporting their communities (that is, Republican moral foundations). In contrast, Democrats were twice as likely as Republicans to donate when the charity was described as ensuring the protection of a home to every individual.

The researchers said their findings were supported in two additional studies that focused on children's charities, including one for children's advocacy, which seeks to break the cycle of child abuse through prevention, education, advocacy and funding. The charity was described as either aligning with Republican moral foundations of purity and loyalty or Democratic moral foundations of equality and protection from harm. Again focusing on the participants who value morals highly, the researchers found that when the charity description emphasized protection from harm, Democrats were much more likely than Republicans to donate; when the charity description emphasized purity and loyalty to community, Republicans were more likely than Democrats to donate.

"We found that while both Republicans and Democrats tend to equally value justice and caring for the vulnerable, Republicans place a much higher value on issues of purity and respect for authority," said Karen Page Winterich, study co-author and assistant professor of marketing at Pennsylvania State University. "Given these differences, Republicans are more inclined to donate to a charity when these values of purity and respect are met, whereas Democrats are more inclined to donate when the emphasis is purely on equality or protection rather than respect or purity."

"Charities, in addition to focusing on their main mission, must also clarify how their mission is aligned with the moral foundations of a donor's political identity," said Yinlong Zhang, study co-author and associate professor of marketing at the University of Texas at San Antonio. "A very simple repositioning of the charity's description so that it aligns with a person's political identity can increase donation intentions two- or threefold. Of course, this raises important questions for charities in terms of their communication strategy. But assuming this divide does not exist can only hurt their chances of maximizing donations from liberals and conservatives."

Sizemore 'beyond being anxious or frustrated'

As recently as three weeks ago Grady Sizemore seemed optimistic about returning from the disabled list in early June, but as has so often been the case with the former star setbacks have squashed those plans.

In updating Sizemore?s status yesterday manager Manny Acta admitted that the center fielder is nowhere close to returning from knee and back surgeries because he hasn?t been cleared to run the bases yet and there isn?t even a timetable for him to begin a minor-league rehab assignment.

Sizemore expressed his understandable frustration to Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer:

I?m beyond being anxious or frustrated. I can?t even explain it. It?s almost feels like a part of you is missing. I?ve learned that rushing and trying to get back as soon as possible didn?t work. I tried that last year and I just ended up putting myself in a worse position. That?s why we?re taking it slow now. That?s why it?s important to not just feel good, but to feel really good, to feel great.

Michael Brantley has played well shifting to center field in Sizemore?s absence, but the Indians investing $5 million to re-sign the oft-injured 29-year-old is looking more and more like a sunk cost.

Screenplay Review - The Final Broadcast - ScriptShadow

0 0 1 1342 7651 Suzanna Industries 63 17 8976 14.0 Normal 0 false false false EN-US JA X-NONE
Premise: A strange cult kidnaps a girl from a small town and uses a local radio talk show to promote their twisted beliefs.? About: This is the duo who wrote one of my favorite scripts from last year, ?When The Streetlights Go On? (finished #2 on last year?s Black List). Not sure if they wrote ?Broadcast? before or after ?Streetlights? but if you liked that script, you?re going to be plenty satisfied with this one.? Writers: Chris Hutton & Eddie O?Keefe Details: 127 pages - undated I?m still baffled by these writers.? I do not believe they?re only 23 years old.? Not because the writing is so specific or so good, but because they seem to understand things about life that you don?t understand without an older perspective.? I mean, when your generation?s most famous singer is Justin Bieber, you don?t reference The Beatles.? When you grow up during the Iraq War, you don?t know the intricate make-up of Vietnam.? Yet these two seem to know things that are way beyond what their years would imply.? I guess they?re just old souls.? But I won?t be convinced until I see them in person.?? I mean let?s start with the first page - a centered 30 line paragraph detailing the world you?re about to be transplanted into, which includes segments like: ?The Final Broadcast takes place in an era neither here nor there. It could be 2012 as easily as 1952. It?s a vacuum; an America that exists only in our collective unconscious. The kind of place Edward Hopper might have painted.?? Normally I?d slaughter writers for this.? The audience can?t see this paragraph. These aren?t titles or a voice over.? It?s never meant to be seen onscreen.? So if it?s not in the film, it shouldn?t be in the script! And yet I believe it?s indispensible to the story.? We need to understand this world.? We need to wrap our heads around its idiosyncrasies and rhythms and tone to understand how it?s going to play out on screen.? And this paragraph does that. So I?m in. Even though I?d never recommend anyone else trying it.? But what really sets these two apart ? and I probably mentioned this in their last review ? is how every single scene in their screenplay feels different.? Read the first 10 pages of Broadcast for example.? We get a monologue from a ?Carl Sagan Lite? character in some cheap PBS show about the origins of the Universe.? He tells us, in no uncertain terms, that our existence is pointless.? It?s jarring, unnerving, unsettling, and yet there?s a poeticness to it all that propels you forward. You need to read more.? You WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT ? the only thing that truly matters in a screenplay. So what does happen next?? Well, we meet a girl named Teresa Carnegie, who happens to be the daughter of the host of that show.? She?s watching a drive-thru movie with her friend when she?s kidnapped by some very nasty men.? Afterwards, we run into Gary Glossup, a transplant from the big city who?s just moved in to take over the local talk radio gig.? Gary?s DJ?ing career is turned upside-down when he receives a live call from the men who took Teresa.? They call themselves ?The Association? and proclaim that the end of the world is coming. Because the local cops are morons, Gary has no choice but to get involved in the investigation and save Teresa, a task that?s personal to him as he lost his own daughter many years ago.? So Gary buckles down and starts investigating the kidnapping, which brings him to another boy who went missing some weeks back named Billy Turman.? Rumors were that Billy was abducted by aliens.? But he was eventually found hanging from a tree during Halloween.? Everyone just assumed he was a prop, until the smell clued them in.? Gary?s helped by a strange young reporter named Claire who happens to be in town doing a report on a rare moon eclipse.? But when Gary finds out that her credentials don?t check out, he begins to wonder if she? telling him the truth.? As the eclipse draws near, more insanity begins to unravel, and Gary finds himself questioning everyone and everything around him.? All of this leads, of course, to a shocking conclusion.? You know that show The Killing?? You know how you?ll be watching an episode of it and you?re wondering why the f*ck nothing is happening??? But there?s still something entrancing about the tone and the characters that keeps you going?? And since you want to find out who killed that damn girl, you stick around?? Well imagine The Final Broadcast as the best episode of The Killing ever written times a thousand ? because it has that same kind of dark spooky tone, but it?s actually entertaining!? And because there?s some actual urgency to it (the eclipse ? ticking time bomb!) it moves where The Killing does not.? Speaking of urgency, I have to point out that while these guys do break their share of rules, the core dramatic storytelling pillars are in place.? You have the GOAL ? find the girl.? STAKES ? her life, as well as the lives of others the cult keeps kidnapping.? And URGENCY ? the impending eclipse, when they promise to kill Teresa by.? So with that core there, they can go off-book in a number of other places. Like the way they write their scenes. ?I?ve been Twit-Pitch Reviewing every night and not enough people are surprising me. I?m not talking about big surprises.? I?m just saying, when you write a scene, you have to know that TYPE of scene has been written tens of millions of times before.? So it?s ESSENTIAL you add a minor twist or two to keep it fresh.? ? I was just talking about this with a professional screenwriter the other day in fact.? She had a scene that had been in thousands of movies before but she still had to write it. ?Just the fact that she knew she had to approach the scene differently put her ahead of 99% of the writers out there, because most writers don?t think about that stuff. We talked it through and found a few new elements which would allow her to write a unique version of the scene, and it turned out rather well. So here, in The Final Broadcast, we have the sort of common ?femme fatale? trope.? Our hero sees the drop-dead gorgeous stunner at the end of the bar and we?re assuming we?re going to get that boring predictable ?one-up each other? clever dialogue laced with sexual subtext scene. Then, in the end, he?ll convince her to come home with him.? Instead, he buys her a drink from across the bar, she walks over, hands him the drink, says she doesn?t go out with men twice her age, and leaves.? The conversation is over before it even started. ?Hmmm,? I thought, ?that?s a little different.?? And the thing with this script is, it?s packed with dozens of moments like this. I can?t stress how important this is because it?s the only time I truly get excited by a screenplay these days - when I?m not sure how scenes or a story are going to unravel. That was my experience with ?Streetlights? and that was my experience here.? It?s rare that I give a writer two consecutive ?impressives? in a row.? Their follow-up is almost always a let-down.? But these guys have done it.? And in many ways, this is actually a step-up from ?Streetlights.?? It?s more structured.? It?s cleaner.? But it doesn?t quite reach the heights of that script and I think it?s because there?s a lack of character connection here. ??We really identified with and bonded with the main character in ?Streetlights.?? Here, it?s more about the story/the plot.? Luckily, the plotting and story were top-notch, which is why this still makes the ?impressive? pile.? I love these writers.? [? ] what the hell did I just read? What I learned: I always say ? don?t write 5-6 line paragraphs in a screenplay.? And I?ll continue to say that until my very last script read.? However, any rule can be broken if there?s a direct correlation between the rule and the writer?s strength.? These two are so good with prose, so smooth with their writing, that I actually ENJOYED reading their long paragraphs, which is incredibly rare.? Take for instance, this description of Gary: ?He was once a very handsome twenty-five year old.? However many years and many six-packs have softened his features a bit; softened everything but his old school heritage and sense of resolve. He?s a man cut from the same cloth as Newman or McQueen. The kind of guy they just don?t make anymore.?? That?s a long freaking paragraph.? But it flows so naturally and gives you such a great understanding of the character, that you allow it.? So a big part of breaking the rules is understanding your strengths. If you?re great at dialogue, you can get away with 8 page dialogue scenes.? If you?re great with prose, you can write longer paragraphs.? The trick is to never blindly assume you?re good at something. ?Make sure you KNOW.? Because that?s the reason behind a lot of bad writing ? writers assuming they?re good at something they?re not. ?Play to your strengths people!

BANGKOK (AP) ? For 24 years, Aung San Suu Kyi was either under house arrest or too fearful that if she left Myanmar, the government would never let her return.

Now, in a sign of how much life there has changed, she's back to being a world traveler, catching an 85-minute flight to neighboring Thailand on Tuesday night.

With the installation of an elected government last year, and her party's own entrance into parliament this year, she can claim at least partial success for her long fight and feel the freedom to explore the world.

Suu Kyi is to spend several days in Thailand, meeting with poor migrant workers and war refugees from her homeland, as well as international movers and shakers at the World Economic Forum on East Asia.

She'll return to Myanmar briefly and head to Europe in mid-June, with stops including Geneva and Oslo ? to formally accept the Nobel Peace Prize she won 21 years ago.

In Dublin, she'll share a stage with U2 frontman Bono, a staunch Suu Kyi supporter, at a concert in her honor, according to Irish media. In England, she has been given the rare honor of addressing both houses of Parliament. France's Foreign Ministry says she also plans to stop in Paris.

The tour marks Suu Kyi's latest step in a stunning trajectory from housewife to political prisoner to opposition leader in Parliament, as Myanmar opens to the outside world and sheds a half century of military rule. Meetings with world leaders are planned along the way as dignitaries line up to shake Suu Kyi's hand.

The last time the 66-year-old Nobel laureate flew abroad was a year before the Berlin Wall came down, in April 1988, when she traveled from London to Myanmar to nurse her dying mother.

Until then she had led an international lifestyle, growing up partly in India, where her mother was ambassador. She later attended Oxford, worked for the United Nations in New York and Bhutan and then married British academic Michael Aris and raised their two sons in England.

Suu Kyi returned to Myanmar just as an uprising erupted against the military regime. As daughter of Gen. Aung San, the country's independence hero, she was thrust into the forefront of demonstrations until the military brutally crushed the protests and locked her under house arrest in 1989.

Over the next two decades she became the world's most famous political prisoner. During intermittent periods of freedom, she declined opportunities to go abroad for fear she would not be allowed to re-enter Myanmar.

Suu Kyi's commitment to the cause came at high personal cost. In 1999, she stayed in Myanmar even as her husband was dying of cancer in England. They last saw each other in 1995, after which the junta denied Aris a visa.

After her release from house arrest in November 2010, Suu Kyi had an emotional reunion with her younger son, Kim Aris, when the junta gave him a visa after a decade-long separation.

The English leg of Suu Kyi's trip is bound to include some family time. She will celebrate her 67th birthday on June 19 while in England, where Kim lives.

Suu Kyi's aides have offered few details about her trip aside from the destinations, saying only that she will pack medicine for motion sickness.

"She gets airsick and seasick very easily. She will have to take her pills to prevent airsickness," said Win Htein, a senior official from her National League for Democracy party. He said she was typically stoic ahead of her travels: "She doesn't look too excited about it."

Thailand was not part of the original itinerary but Suu Kyi decided last week to attend the economic forum. She has a Friday speaking slot that is bound to be the event's main attraction.

Suu Kyi's appearance at the conference had threatened to upstage that of Myanmar President Thein Sein, but he canceled over the weekend citing "urgent matters" at home, said Thai Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Thongphakdi. He rescheduled his first official visit to Thailand for next week.

Thein Sein took power last year from the military junta following elections that were deemed unfair by international observers. Since then he has surprised much of the world by engineering sweeping reforms, though military leaders still have great control over the country.

Since Suu Kyi's release, many international dignitaries have visited her in Myanmar, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in December and British Prime Minister David Cameron in April. Cameron suggested she visit her "beloved Oxford" in June.

Suu Kyi replied at the time: "Two years ago I would have said 'Thank you for the invitation, but sorry.' But now I am able to say 'Perhaps,' and that's great progress."

Farmington High parts ways with state champion boys soccer coach Felix Chacon

Farmington High School is making a change at the top of its defending state champion boys soccer program.

Felix Chacon, who coached the Scorpions to the 4A state title in 2011 and was a member of the coaching staff during the team's 2009 state championship run, was removed from the position on Friday.

"Farmington High has made a decision to make a change with our boys soccer team," said Farmington High athletic director Don Lorett. "We have great kids and will move forward and continue to strive for success."

That was the only explanation Chacon said he received via email from the school on Friday.

"Apparently the only direction from the top is downhill. In order to keep coaching at FHS, one must not aspire to achieve new heights or be successful," Chacon said. "My commitment, credentials and experience with the FHS boys soccer team speaks louder than any snake hissing in the grass."

Lorett declined to comment on the reasons for Chacon's dismissal.

"It is discriminatory in nature and propagated by personal and political vendettas of an unloyal and insecure authority," Chacon said.

Chacon, who also earned two different coach of the year honors during his tenure with the Scorps, will continue to teach for Farmington Municipal Schools, and said he will turn his focus on coaching his kids.

"I am going to take a break and dedicate my time to my young daughters' soccer development as well as youth development in the community via

club soccer, and focus on my teaching responsibilities for FMS and the University of New Mexico."

The Scorpions boys soccer program has been highly successful, sending two players in three years to the UNM Lobos program along with its state championship success.

Charles Klepac, a Scorpion senior captain on the 2011 team and Lobo commit, was taken back by the news on Friday.

"It certinaly surprised me. He was a good coach and I honestly don't see why he lost his job," Klepac said. "He knew the game and taught all of us a lot of things I believe."

Ryan Reeves, another a senior captain on the 2011 team, said the lessons learned from Chacon went beyond soccer.

"He lost the job? And after a state championship? I felt like he pushed us to new boundaries that we didn't know we could go. He not only helped us grow on the field but also as individuals," Reeves said. "He was a great coach."

Subsidizing wind and solar because China and Germany are doing it

Here is President Obama speaking in Ohio Thursday:

We also need to keep investing in clean energy like wind power and solar power.

?? And as long as I?m President, we are going to keep on making those investments.? I am not going to cede the wind and solar and advanced battery industries to countries like China and Germany that are making those investments.? I want those technologies developed and manufactured here in Ohio, here in the Midwest, here in America.? (Applause.)? By American workers.? That?s the future we want.

The President has picked three industries and is arguing for an industrial policy to subsidize them in part because other countries are subsidizing them.

Let?s extend this logic.? Suppose China or Germany starts subsidizing the biotech industry.? Should the U.S. government subsidize American biotech firms so that ?those technologies [are] developed and manufactured ? here in America, by American workers??

What if China subsidizes web development firms, Germany subsidizes auto manufacturers, France subsidizes biotech firms, Japan subsidizes advanced battery firms, Brazil subsidizes ethanol firms, and South Korea subsidizes chip manufacturers?? Should the U.S. subsidize all of those domestic industries so that we don?t cede any of them?

What if the Canadian or Mexican government were to subsidize high-tech oil production firms, or Brazil to subsidize advanced tobacco production?? Is the President?s policy to keep here in American through subsidies all industries that other governments are subsidizing, or only the ?good? industries that he thinks should be kept in America?

More generally, should the U.S. government (a) subsidize particular industries and if so (b) determine those subsidies based on what other countries are doing?

If we are to subsidize particular industries over others, how do we square that with the argument, made by the President and others, that we need to remove such subsidies from the tax code?

If the rule for structuring subsidies is to make sure we don?t cede certain industries to other countries, how is that different from giving the governments of those countries control over the shape and structure of the U.S. economy?

If the President wants to subsidize wind and solar power because he wants to accelerate the development of carbon-free alternatives to coal and natural gas, he should make that argument.? If President Obama is instead going to subsidize industries either because he likes them or because other Nations? governments are subsidizing them, then we must acknowledge that he is engaged in industrial policy, aka state-managed capitalism, with an open question about whether the managing state is based in DC, Berlin, or Beijing.

Bergenfield Firefighter Stole $2,020 From Union, Cops Say
United States?(New Jersey) - A borough firefighter has been charged with third- degree theft, after allegedly taking $2,020 from the fireman's union checking account. Edgardo Gomez, 41, of Dumont, was arrested May 14 and admitted to making ATM withdrawals from the Fireman's Benevolent Association account between Feb. 24 and March 13, according to Police Capt. Michael Carr.

Gomez was released with a summons, Carr said, but the case has been referred to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office. "They will review the case at their level, and they may tell us to add a misconduct charge," Carr said.

Borough Administrator Frederick McGarril confirmed Thursday that Gomez had been suspended without pay, pending the outcome of the case. McGarril would not comment further, saying it was a personnel matter.

Gomez was the treasurer of the association, which has roughly six members. Carr said no motive had been determined.
