Birmingham University members strike
(21/06/12) General secretary Dave Prentis sent a message of support and solidarity to members at Birmingham University today as they begin two days of strike action.
In a message to the branch, Mr Prentis wrote: "On behalf of our national executive council and UNISON conference, I send you our solidarity and full support for your brave action today and tomorrow and your campaign for decent pay.
"Please convey my very best wishes to all our members taking action."
Some 200 UNISON members are taking part in unprecedented strike action the first in 20 years in a dispute over pay negotiations which have reached an impasse.
Members have been in formal dispute with Birmingham University since December.??
UNISON's members are cleaners, catering assistants, administrators and earn as little as 13,000 a year full time before tax. They only receive a maximum of six months sick pay - while academic staff get 12 months - and the university is ending bank holiday and weekend allowances.??
Last year the university's surplus rose from 22.3m to 27m per year.?
